Built as Bell's Institution in 1841, it was one of several such schools in Scottish Burghs, founded under the will of Dr Andrew Bell. The building was designed by the architect William Robertson in Greek Revival style. It ceased to be a school in 1937, and became Inverness Public Library in 1980.

Abertarff House

Built in 1593, this is one of the oldest houses in the town and is located on Church Street. It is a fine example of domestic architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries and is the only house in the burgh containing a turnpike staircase.

Originally the town house of Colonel Archibald Fraser of Beaufort and Abertarff, (son of Lord Lovat of the '45 rebellion), it remained Fraser property until the mid-nineteenth century when it was acquired by the National Commercial Bank of Scotland who remained the owner for about 100 years. It was fully restored by the National Trust for Scotland in 1966 and was their regional headquarters until their recent move to Balnain House in Huntly Street.

St Mary's Well, Culloden

This "Clootie" well is the object of an annual 'pilgrimage'. Behind the spring enclosure, are the remains of a pool and evidence of piping giving the impression that water from the spring was once used for bathing.

Dawn in Inverness

I recall arriving in Inverness on the overnight train from Edinburgh around 5am. Nothing was open. As dawn broke I took this photograph from the footbridge over the river Ness. The full moon was still in the sky.

This beautifully carved bench now overlooks the kids' play area in MacDonald Park. A really pleasant place to sit, and I hope it survives any less favourable attention from the local neds.

Craig Dunain Burial Ground

This small burial ground is at the rear of Craig Dunain Hospital. There is only one recognisable headstone inside the burial ground. The area was cleared by the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders a few years ago and this memorial erected to Colour Sergeant James Munro VC who won his medal at the Lucknow and was buried somewhere nearby in a pauper's grave.

Caledonian Stadium

Football ground, home to Inverness Caledonian Thistle since shortly after their rather acrimonious foundation by amalgamating Inverness Thistle and Inverness Caledonian. While currently bottom of the SPL the long overdue arrival of league football in Inverness has been a great success. Well done to whoever put the main stand on the east side of the pitch. Best to get out of those nasty easterlies, especially as spectators are forced to sit in the cold now. View from a layby on the A9.

Moray Firth from Westhill

The countryside around Inverness is fast becoming built-up, and the photo looks north-west over some recently-built houses. This area, near Culloden, is now more or less a suburb of Inverness, sought-after for its views over the Moray Firth and beyond to Ben Wyvis.

Isolated Scots Pine

Isolated Scots pine in fields between Culloden wood and Culloden battlefield
Hard frost, freezing fog and extremely still conditions for three or four days over Christmas '08 led to spectacular frost crystal build up on grass, trees etc. When Inverness was shrouded in fog, conditions were beautiful up on the moor.

Cumberland's Stone

Near to the field of the Battle of Culloden (1746) lies this five foot high conglomerate glacial erratic boulder from which the Duke of Cumberland is said, probably wrongly, to have watched the fight. The stone had its wording carved into it by a local man in 1881.
