Dingwall to Inverness Train

Interesting view from a small bridge over this single track railway. The relatively infrequent trains are clearly audible from the Bunchrew camp site.

Inverness Bus Station 2008

One of the most inviting bus stations that I have visited. The waiting area is warm and bright, with very friendly booking staff. Just what is needed if more people are to be encouraged to use public transport.

Inverness Bus Station 1979

To make a day trip to Stornoway from Inverness using public transport necessitated a very early start in order to get the first bus for the long ride to Ullapool. At that hour (6.20 a.m.), the bus station did not provide an inviting appearance.

West Parish Church

The West Parish Church was built in a classical style using ashlar blocks in 1840. The interior was refitted in 1895. Since then, several modern stained glass windows have been installed, including a memorial window in the south wall dedicated to Reverend George Henry Grant, who was minister there from 1936 to 1949.

The columns on the frontage are in Ionic style. An unusual feature visible on top of the square tower is an octagonal belfry with an ogee roof.

Wrecked car on moorland south of Allt Mor

Cars are often joy-ridden and wrecked on this stretch of road. Photo taken just by the sharp deviation in the road with coniferous forestry to the south-east just visible in the distance.

Culduthel House

This was once a fine Georgian manor house, set in its own extensive landscaped gardens a good 2 miles into the countryside from central Inverness. Now, it's just another property opportunity having been swallowed up by Inverness' creeping expansion and sub-divided into flats. The landscaped gardens have all been built over, and only sections of the majestic forested areas remain today.

Cromwell's Tower 2009

This is the same view as yesterday's photograph only 100 years later.

Well, it's not exactly the same view as that's no longer possible due to BP's serious industrial fencing blocking access to the original photographer's location, plus trees which weren't there either.

However even though only half the tower is visible, the change in scenery is striking. What was agricultural land a century ago is now a grubby industrial estate, and all the quaint old buildings consigned to history.

Cromwell's Citadel (believe it or not)

This is pretty much all that remains of the once mighty Citadel built by Oliver Cromwell to subdue the Highlands. It was a 5-sided structure, with defensive 'points' jutting out from each corner giving it a star-like appearance.

This grassy mound is one of those "points", and at one time had a hefty wall on top of it, with a guard tower.

Cromwell's Citadel

This tower is all that remains of the citadel built here by Oliver Cromwell, much to the annoyance of the locals. It's known locally as "the clocktower" but is actually the remains of a windmill. BP destroyed what was left of the fort under its huge oil storage tanks, as seen in the background.
