Clava Cairns


The North-East Passage Cairn - although today this is open to the elements, originally the overlapping stone structure would have been built to form a totally enclosed, three and a half metre high, inner chamber. The entrance is oriented so that the setting sun on the longest day of the year would illuminate the chamber

Petty Bank Navigation Buoy, Inverness Firth


The Petty Bank Lateral Navigation Buoy not only marks the channel into and out off Inverness but also marks the end of a sewer outfall. Note the strong tide running just after High Water.

The Falcon's Return, Eastgate Shopping Centre

Many retail outlets in Inverness are larger than the size of the town would seem to require. However, As Inverness is by far the biggest town in the Scottish Highlands, many of the retail outlets serve not only the local population, but also provide for residents from a very wide area.

The Strathnairn Railway Viaduct


This graceful structure carries the railway south from Inverness. It was opened in November 1898 just months after its engineer, Murdoch Paterson, had died. It is 600 yards in length and has 29 arches,the central one crossing the River Nairn having a span of 100 feet and the remaining 28 with a span of 50 feet

Landing at Inverness


From this roundabout the gated road is the original road that went past the end of the runway at Inverness Airport. Traffic on this road was stopped by traffic lights when planes were landing. This road has been closed and a new semicircular shaped road takes the traffic further away from the end of the runway.

Leanach Cottage


The only surviving building after the battle of Culloden was the Old Leanach Cottage which was inhabited until 1912 and then kept preserved by the Gaelic Society of Inverness. Now part of the visitor centre run by the National Trust for Scotland.

Statue of Flora Macdonald


Flora MacDonald was the heroine who smuggled Bonnie Prince Charlie across the Western Isles disguised as her maid Betty Burke, after the Battle of Culloden in 1746. This statue, which is unusual in having a dog also depicted, was erected in front of Inverness Castle in the early 1900s. She is seen looking south west - down the Great Glen looking in vain for Charlie to return.

Cawdor Big Wood


Cawdor Big Wood extends to a couple of square kilometres of mature deciduous and native scots pine woodland covered by conservation designations and agreements. Here at the west side the woodland is primarily open oak and beech woodland, with a wonderful carpet of bluebells appearing from the woodrush every June.
