Castle Wynd

Inverness Burgh Police Headquarters at Castle Wynd, which was sadly demolished in the 1970's to make way for new developement. In the background are the ramparts of Inverness Castle, which was the Headquarters of Inverness-shire Constabulary - surely the shortest distance between two such buildings anywhere in the country!

Jacobite Queen

Jacobite Queen, originally uploaded by conner395.
The Jacobite Queen - seen here at her home berth at Tomnahurich Bridge, Inverness - is flagship of Jacobite Cruises, which provide pleasure trips down the Caledonian Canal and on into Loch Ness.

The Tomnahurich - or Millerton - Swing Bridge behind the boat carries the A82 Inverness-Fort William-Glasgow trunk road over the Canal, one of two road bridges over the Canal in Inverness.

Behind the bridge is Tomnahurich (Hill of the Fairies) which until recently was Inverness's main cemetery. There are graves right the way to the top, but the facility is now full and a new graveyard (and crematorium) has been established further out the A82.

Jacobite Queen:- "Built in 1949 by R.W. Hawthorn Leslie at Hebburn on Tyne and named Tyne Queen, she served as a passenger ferry on the Tyne until 1986. In 1987 she was acquired by Jacobite Cruises and rebuilt with the traditional lines of a small steamer. There is accommodation on three decks, all recently upgraded with central heating and double glazing, giving up to 159 passengers ample choice of covered or on deck seating. The 450HP Volvo D12 diesel engine gives this 23-metre vessel a service speed of 10.5 knots." See the Jacobite Cruises website.

General's Well

General's Well, originally uploaded by The Poss.

On banks of River Ness near Bucht Park. According to a plaque the well may have early Christian connection but gets its name from General MacIntyre who lived nearby and drank the water everyday believing it had health giving properties. Perhaps he was right but nevertheless todays Health & Safety Police have despoiled the well with a small brass plaque (below left of the carved inscription) telling visitors that the water is not of drinkable quality.

Tomnacross school

A three part structure featuring three generations of architecture, from left to right: an old style grey stone building, a white-harled later one, and finally a sumptuous curved-roof modern extension. Together with a playing field, all viewed from the vicinity of the ancient Tom na Croiseige. Could those that used to hold court there have even of dreamt of such developments?

Waiting at Inverness Station 1973/2003

1973

Inverness station is a V-shaped affair and this is the north side, from which services for the far north line to Wick and Thurso depart. Having some time to wait for my train, I went into the refreshment room for a cup of tea. There I was approached by a figure who had clearly seen his better days many years ago. He asked me for money, on the grounds that his doctor had told him he was not allowed to drink anything except whisky.
