This well in Culloden Forest is known as a cloutie well.
For many generations, every May Day would see folk coming from miles around to offer the well a piece of clothing of a sick person in the hope that this would bring about a cure.
Att one time it was particularly well (oops, pardon the pun!) appointed as it was built with a circular wall around it to allow people to use it for bathing.
Most of the other cloutie wells in the highlands are simply open springs.
As can be seen, the tradition of hanging rags at the well still persists to this day.
St. Mary's Well is said to be haunted by the ghosts of highlanders killed at nearby Culloden Battlefield.

Oh.. other than its very classic physical feature, cultural connotation of this structure is very rich ....
What an interesting and unusual tradition. I think it's worth to reflate and to cultivate it. I can imagine that it could be an party of convivial drinking...
