Pouncing Fox near Ruisaurie Burn

The fox was trying to catch a mouse in a field on the west side of Ruisaurie Burn just above its junction with Red Burn. The burns flow down the steep brae in deep tree-filled ravines before joining and continuing along the edge of Teachnuick Wood. Part of Beauly can be seen through the trees.

This is the centre of Beauly and most of the shops are in or near The Square. The main road through The Square leads to Muir of Ord. The ruins of the Valliscaulian priory are behind the tall trees on the right.

Pass south of Meall Mor, Monadhliath

Pass south of Meall Mor, Monadhliath.

Looking across the pass between Meall Mor and Carn na h-Easgain. This takes the old military road to Fort George, the A9 taking a different route to the south until the 1980s. Now the new dual carriageway A9 runs along the old route down below in the forest. Crags and boulder fields suggest a glacial melt water role for the pass.

Dalriach House and Steading Ruin

90 years ago this strath was heavily populated, although there would have been no young men. They would all have been in the forces. These were they people I was remembering that day.

Tomnahurich Cemetery

Tom-na-hurich ("hill of the yew trees" or "hill of the fairies") is a hill shaped like an upturned boat.

It lies on an otherwise flat plain on the outskirts of Inverness - now well within the City Limits but a century or more ago it lay out in the countryside and became the graveyard for Inverness.

Now all but full, it is a beautiful setting, with graves all the way up to the summit of the hill.

As its trees are mainly deciduous, and we have had so much snow recently, the hill looks like a wig of grey hair.

This view taken from the Bruce Gardens end.

Train to Kyle of Lochalsh 1993

26007 + 26001 depart with the 12.35 Inverness - Kyle of Lochalsh train. The 4 Mk. 2 coaches would not tax the locos very much.
ScotRail had these two class 26s refurbished and repainted into their mid 1960s green livery for working on the Kyle line that summer. Sadly this was the only summer that they did this. The service is currently worked by class 158 sprinters - not quite the same.

Eastgate Continental Street Market

Here's a wet Saturday morning in Eastgate, Inverness, with the continental street market in full swing despite the weather.

I'll tell you what, the rain has put a beautiful sheen on the cobblestones (it disguises the chewing gum too!).
