Dingwall Junction

Shortly after leaving Dingwall station heading north the line divides at this bridge (just beyond the 20 sign) over the River Peffery to head either west for Kyle of Lochalsh or continue north to Thurso and Wick. Here the footpath from the town centre (bottom left) joins the "Round Dingwall Walk", which crosses the railway line at the pedestrian crossing shown in the image.

The Dingwall Canal enters the Cromarty Firth

The tide was out when this was taken. For the final half mile before it enters the sea, the canal is separated from the Cromarty Firth to the north by a narrow strip of land a few yards wide ending in the point shown near the middle of the image. Part of the Cromarty Bridge carrying the A9 is visible on the horizon to the left of the picture.

Clachnaharry - 24-09-1994, originally uploaded by agcthoms.
37427 'Highland Enterprise' takes the 10.25 Inverness - Kyle of Lochalsh train past Clachnaharry. The rear vehicle is a class 101 driving trailer converted to an observation car. Sadly this only lasted a couple of years, when the service was provided by class 156 sprinters. On this scenic route in the busy tourist season, surely a backward step.
