White Bridge

White Bridge, originally uploaded by Duncan Brown (Cradlehall).

This is a Wade bridge which carried the old military road from Fort George to Cawdor. This hump-backed bridge crosses the river Nairn near Clephanton and is only wide enough for one vehicle. Because of its blind summit, access across the bridge is controlled by traffic lights.

Meallmore Lodge

Built in 1869 as a hunting lodge for the clan Macintosh, Meallmore Lodge has over the years entertained royalty such as Edward VII. In later years the lodge became a very renowned hotel in the Inverness area. In 1987 Meallmore Lodge was converted to a care home. Although occupying a somewhat remote location on the B9154 over 10Km out of Inverness, it is obviously very successful, with extensive new building in progress.

The B851 from Farr down on to the A9 is generally narrow with passing places, despite being quite a busy commuter route. This narrow bridge over a tributary of the River Nairn is necessarily controlled by lights.

Ness Walk

Ness Walk Inverness Scotland, originally uploaded by conner395.

The stretch of roadway between Eden Court Theatre and St Andrews Cathderal used to be very wide in the days when most vehicles were horse-drawn.

Subsequently the road was split into two parallel roads, the upper being named Bishops Road and the one nearest the River retained the name Ness Walk.

This portion of Ness Walk finally lived up to its name when it was pedestrianised, and now provides what it did in bygone times, a nice safe riverside walk from whence to admire the river and its inhabitants and also the interesting array of architecture on the East side of the river.

This view was taken opposite Eden Court Theatre, looking northwards towards the Cathedral (just visible at top left)

Daviot Church

This wee kirk was always a landmark - even a sort of 'lighthouse' in former years for travellers coming north on the twisty and undulating A9 road from Perth (pre road upgrading). Coming abreast the Meallmore Brae and seeing this landmark on the opposite side of the glen meant it was only another couple of hairpin bends, intersting descents and arduous ascents before Inverness was finally reached. It's a lovely little church in quite an exposed location.

Provost's Hoose

This property is called Ach-An-Eas. It is now a Council-owned residential home in Inverness but it was once the home of Dr. Alexander Ross, Provost of Inverness and a very distinguished highland architect who was responsible for the design and build of Inverness Cathedral – the first cathedral to be built in Britain since the Reformation.

The lamp-post in the foreground is to show that this was once the provost's house. All houses in the city that were homes to the provosts of Inverness have similar lamp-posts. This is a custom that continues to this day.

Cleopatra Slab

Cleopatra Slab, originally uploaded by The Poss.
According to the Highland Clearances website
The "Cleopatra" stone on Cromarty foreshore commemorates the many ships that sailed from Aberdeen or Dundee to Canada carrying emigrants. Often they would pick up extra passengers at Cromarty. The main part is thought to be a quotation from Hugh Miller and published in the Inverness Courier on 22nd June 1831:
"The Cleopatra as she swept past the town of Cromarty was greeted with three cheers by crowds of the inhabitants and the emigrants returned the salute, but mingled with the dash of the waves and the murmurs of the breeze, their faint huzzas seemed rather sounds of wailing and lamentation than of a congratulatory farewell."
Round the edge are the names of many of the ships which carried the emigrants:- Ami; Ann; Asia; Blagdon; Boyne; Brilliant; Canada: Cleopatra; Clio; Corsair; Dalmarnock; Diligence; Economist; George; Good Intent; Headleys; Industry; Isabella Simpson; John; Jane Kay; Kate; Lady Grey; Lady MacNaughton; Lamb; Lord Brougham; Planet; Poland; Ropbert & Margaret; Rover; Salamis; Theodora; Triton; Tweed; Vestal; Viewforth; XYZ; Zealous; Zephyr.

Culloden Moor

According to the landowners and custodians of the battlefield, the National Trust for Scotland, drainage and forestry has dried out the moor since the battle, so this boggy pool beside the Jacobite lines may give an idea of the terrain at the time. Certainly, it is known Jacobite troops on this flank, down in a boggy hollow, took longer to reach the Government lines - the right flank on higher, drier ground met their fate much more rapidly.

St Michael and All Angels Church

St Michael and All Angels Church at the corner of Abban Street and Lochalsh Road, Inverness, was built in 1886 on the other side of the River Ness from its present location. It was moved stone by stone with the roof being floated in sections on barges across the river in 1903/04. The interior was redesigned by Sir Ninian Comper in 1904 and 1926. A special feature is the stained glass window of the four Archangels by Comper.
