Highland Omnibuses GL6

Highland Omnibuses GL6 FSD469 a 1954 Guy Arab LUF with Alexander body, in Farraline Park Bus Station, Inverness waiting to leave on the Drummond School town service route on 8 June 1968. Just acquired from Western SMT and still in their cream and red livery, the bus was withdrawn the following week after a collision with a refuse wagon.

This photo was taken in June 1968.

Inverness Bus Station 2010

This is the city bus station on a Saturday afternoon without a bus in sight. Perhaps they'll all come at once. The Highland Council has unwittingly provided the four blue poles complete with landing pads for the benefit of the seagulls.

Loch na Ba Ruaidhe (Loch of the Red Cattle)

View from the roadside.

Most people travelling the length of Loch Ness do so on the A82 road, passing through the village of Drumnadrochit (Gaelic "Druim na Droichaid" - ridge of the bridge). If however, instead of continuing on the A82 northwards you turn left at Drumnadrochit, a whole vista of Highland scenery awaits you. You can continue up the A831 to Cannich, and thencedown Strathglass to Beauly, or simply go up the A831 a mile or so to Milton and then take a right turn on to the A833 road over Culnakirk (G. "cul na circ" - back land of the hen). It's a quite steep and winding climb up to the summit but you do seem to enter another world of hills, undulating moors and lochs. The last one before you enter the "hidden valley" that is the fertile and sheltered Glen Convinth, is a wee loch barely visible from the roadside. There is however a VERY rough small layby, and it is worth parking up and straddling the well-used fence to enjoy this wee loch, Loch na Ba Ruaidhe. It is in a sheltered hollow, and an idyllic setting which at some time in the past clearly supported a family - the patches of green tend to indicate where habitation and cultivation once took place - whose present location is maybe somewhere in North America.

It's a lovely spot but, sheltered as it may be, it would be no picnic to live here in the wild of a scottish winter, and getting supplies from the village in the pre-automobile days would have been some effort.

Northern Constabulary Pipe Band at Inverness Tattoo

Eyes front, and the pipers take a breather as the drummers take their turn at entertaining the crowd, as the Parade makes its way down Bridge Street and over the Ness Bridge.

Saturday 31st July 2010, the final evening of the week-long Inverness Cadet Tattoo. Being the final night, all the event participants take part in the finale parade through the streets of Inverness City Centre to the Event Venue at the Northern Meeting Park. En route, the parade - which is led by a Massed Pipe Band passes the Town Hall where the Salute is taken by Colonel Roderick Wood (1st Battalion The Highlanders Army Cadet Force) and City of Inverness Provost Jimmy Gray.

The Pipe Bands leading the parade were Northern Constabulary (Pipe Major Kenny Watson) and Queens Own Highlanders Regimental Association (Pipe Major Andy Venters), along with members of the Army Cadet Force Pipe Band. (Some of NorCon's members also play in the Regimental Assoc Band, and some play in the Cadet Band).

Drum Majors were Jackie McCall (Assoc), who has also turned out for NorCon in the past, and Duncan Macdonald (NorCon)

Former Palace Cinema

Opened in November 1938, the former Palace cinema once seated 1,023 patrons. It closed as a cinema in 1963, becoming a bingo hall. It remained as such until 2006. It now lies empty, but planning permission has been given for the building to be demolished and a hotel built in its place. This picture is shot from the ramparts of Inverness Castle.

Drumnadrochit from Craigmonie

Looking East from Craigmonie with Loch Ness in the distance. Craigmonie is a rocky outcrop that is the site of an Iron Age fort and hiding place of the marauding Scandinavian Prince Monie and his sister, who briefly escaped the wrath of the local Pictish tribesmen, before retreating up Glen Urquhart. The picts caught up with and slayed the Prince at Corrimony, also derived from his name. His sister integrated into the local community peacefully.

Castle Stuart

Castle Stuart was built in the early 17th century by James Stewart, third Earl of Moray, and his wife Anne Gordon. Shortly afterwards the Stewarts fled the castle when it was captured by the Mackintoshes. The castle fell into ruin, but was restored in the 20th century and is run as a luxury guest house. It has a web site with a curiously garbled account of its turbulent past - how could it have 'stood as a strong refuge' when at the same time it 'fell into decline'?
