Inverness Railway Panorama

View NW from the main road above the east end of the Inverness Railway Yards and Station, over the firth to Ord Hill - there was no Kessock Bridge in 1948. The passenger train, headed by a Stanier Class 5 4-6-0, has just arrived from the Far North Line. As was the practise, it has run over the triangle past the Terminus and is about to reverse into a platform. It was typical Scottish weather and unfortunately a cloud darkens the middle distance, but the Station can be distinguished on the left. Note the large gantry of signals on the right.

Kinloss Abbey

Lest we forget..., originally uploaded by moraypix.
"At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them." - Laurence Binyon.

The ruins of Kinloss Abbey stand in the midst of a graveyard south of the village of Kinloss and two miles north east of Forres. The Abbey was destroyed in 1652 when Cromwell's soldiers purchased the stones to build the citadel at Inverness.

During the early part of the 1939-1945 War, a special plot was set aside for service war burials, and all but three of the war graves are in this plot. Elsewhere in the burial ground there is one 1914-1918 War grave. Contained within the grounds today are the Commonwealth War graves for fallen men from WWII, those serving with the Australian, Canadian and N.Z Air Forces plus others from the Royal Air Force.

Lochan in Fairy Glen

This lochan or man made pool in the Fairy Glen at Rosiemarkie is fed by a lade from the main Eathie Burn which runs through the glen.It has perhaps been used to store water for mills further down the burn nearer the village. The glen is truly a magical place with a great variety of trees, some of considerable height.

The Auld Brig at Keith

The Auld Brig - Keith, originally uploaded by moraypix.

The Auld Brig was built in 1609 by Thomas Murray and his wife Janet Lindsay. It was thought to be in memory of their son who was drowned crossing the ford.

Campbell's Hole is the large stone under the bridge – an alleged refuge for Campbell soldiers retreating from battle with the Jacobites in 1746.

Weekend Reflections under Cantray Bridge

Under the bridge on the East side.

Hidden away in the countryside near Culloden Battlefield, a little road leads you from the Culloden side of the River Nairn to the fertile lands and uplands of East Strathnairn.

Crossing is done via a bridge which still carries road traffic, albeit with a weight restriction in place.

At first glance, and indeed unless you get out of your car at all, you will think nothing of the bridge, which once had a mill alongside. Stop nearby however and walk back to the bridge and you realise that the camouflage of trees helps to hide an historical gem, and some beautiful sights.

At this point the River Nairn is docile and shallow, but it is the colour of cola. The sun striking it makes it look like burnished gold and the canopy of green leaves reflecting upon the slow-moving water makes it look so fresh.

It is apparent that it probably takes its best shots in Winter when the trees are devoid of foliage, but the leaves add a certain aura of splendour.

On the West-side face, where very few folk will thus have seen it, there is a coat of arms and a panel engraved:
THIS BRIDGE WAS BUILT BY DAVID DAVIDSON ESQ OF CANTRAY IN THE YEAR 1774
Albeit the weight restriction, and the strengthening bars across the North arch, this bridge looks like it will be around for a long time yet, continuing its long service to the community.

Waterfall in Fairy Glen

The glen gets its name from an old tradition. Every Sunday, the children of the village of Rosemarkie would gather in the glen, at the site of a spring. They would tidy up the pool area around the spring and sprinkle flower petals on it as a gift to the fairies. The fairies in return would ensure a good clean supply of water for the village.

Village of Rosemarkie

This is a place with a long history. Saint Moluag, an early missionary to the Picts had a cell here in the 6th century and about 716 Saint Boniface established a monastery on the site. The name does not refer to the flower rose but the Ros is from the headland of Chanonry Ness and in the Gaelic it originally was Rosmarcanaidh, the 'Horse Burn at the Point'.In the defile behind the village is the 'Fairy Glen' where there are splendid walks and waterfalls amidst the trees.
