Forbes Fountain

Autumn around the River Ness in Inverness Scotland - Forbes Fountain, originally uploaded by conner395.

Forbes Fountain opposite Bellfield Park, Island Bank Road, close to the Ness Islands. The fountain is switched off due to impending cold snap, and the surrounding trees have ditched their foliage in anticipation!

This marble fountain used to reside outside the Town House in the City Centre but road widening there meant it would no longer fit, so was relocated to this beautiful walk.

Fortrose Tollbooth

Fortrose Cathedral was largely demolished in the mid-seventeenth century by Oliver Cromwell to provide building materials for the citadel at Inverness. The detached chapter house was used as the tollbooth of Fortrose after the Reformation.

The main stand at Scottish Premier League club Inverness Caledonian Thistle, whose ground is on the exposed banks of the Moray Firth. Sitting in the uncovered (or barely sheltered) seats at Caledonian Stadium watching the Caley Jags on a cold, wet day must be a real endurance test. The 'wing' seats were added after the original section of the stand had opened.

The old Avoch to Fortrose Railway Line

A good section of the railway line passes through Craig Wood, an area designated as an Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland. The path is maintained by a local retired gardener and Green Gym members organised by the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers in Munlochy. The wood is reported to be the home of red squirrels, pine martens, roe deer, pheasants and buzzards.

Mouth of the Dingwall Canal

The Dingwall Canal was designed by Thomas Telford and is the most northerly in the UK. It was built in 1816. After the arrival of the railway at Dingwall in 1863, the canal was superfluous and it had fallen into disuse by 1890. The canal extends just over 1 mile from the Cromarty Firth into Dingwall. Viewed on a cold December day with mist and fog hugging the coast of the Cromarty Firth.

Winter at Muirtown

Muirtown Swing Bridge which carries the road to Beauly (formerly the A9) is now electrically operated.

The last Sunday in November and while southwards, Central Scotland was in gridlock due to massive snow falls, Inverness was simply cold and frosty as the earlier snow settled down.

Muirtown Basin is the holding area for vessels waiting to negotiate the last segment of the Canal (to the Beauly/Moray Firth) and is now busy as a marina and vessel parking area. On the other side of the Muirtown Swing Bridge, the series of locks ("staircase") carries the canal up to the level of Loch Ness, although there's quite a distance before the Loch is actually reached.

An unmapped footbridge gives the walker easy passage over Drynie Burn allowing an uninterrupted walk along the southern shore of Munlochy Bay. Across the bay, the buildings at Bay Farm and the surrounding fields are well seen from this viewpoint.

Looking upstream from Friars Shott. As the tide is in as far as it can be, the water level is pretty high on the grass banks of the River. That bush is well usually above the water level but now its lower branches are being watered directly. This is the effect of the previous day's rain in the Great Glen area having finally reached the sea, only to find the sea is at high tide, so the water level at this point backs up. The ducks and seagulls seemed quite happy!

This line of deciduous trees runs north-south (up the line of the hill from Inshes to Milton of Leys and is exposed to the northeasterly (off the Moray Firth) and southwesterly (funnelled up the Great Glen) winds. Clearly the trees, probably about the highest deciduous ones hereabouts are preparing to shed unnecessary baggage as they prepare for the onslaught of winter.

Passing the South Africa memorial.

This year the Band was invited to escort the Royal British Legion Remembrance Sunday Parade in Dingwall, county town of Ross-shire and home to the 78th Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs). The 78th duly merged with the 72nd (The Duke of Albany's) to become the Seaforth Highlanders.

The Seaforths combined with the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders to form the Queen's Own Highlanders in 1961. More recently, the Queens Own Highlanders and Gordon Highlanders were combined to form The Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons). In May 2006 all the Scottish Infantry Regiments merged to form the Royal Regiment of Scotland. The Highlanders became the 4th Battalion of the new Regiment.

Dingwall has THREE War Memorials, the earliest being the stone Celtic cross to commemorate the 180 men who fell in the Highland Brigade, Seaforth 2nd Battalion during in the South Africa Campaign (Boer War)(1899-1902) where they fought at Modder River and Magersfontein.

The second Memorial (the National) is located outside the National Hotel, and is topped by the life-size figure of a First World War Tommy (Jock) wearing a tin helmet and kilt and carrying a rifle with bayonet fixed. That memorial initially was erected to commemorate the men of the Parish of Dingwall who fell in the Great War 1914-1918 and was subsequently updated to incorporate those Dingwall men who fell in 1939-1945.

The third monument, outside Dingwall Railway Station, was originally erected at the scene of the Battle of Cambrai in Northern France (1917) where the Seaforth Territorials distinguished themselves by their valour. The monument (a wooden cross) complete with tablets added by the locals of Cambrai was subsequently moved to Dingwall.

The procession on Remembrance Day starts from the British Legion premises in High Street, down the length of High Street, to the National Hotel where the Service is held in front of the Great War Memorial. Then the parade continues on past the South Africa Memorial and thence the Railway Station, passing the Cambrai cross before looping back to return up the High Street and back to the British Legion premises.

Railway bridge over River Ness

The original railway bridge of 1862 collapsed during flooding in February 1989. This cut off the railway lines in the northern part of Scotland from Inverness. The present replacement bridge is made of steel and was prefabricated. It had to be put up urgently to restore rail services.

This picture shows what remains of a large nursing home in Inverness after it went on fire 18th October 2010. Fortunately, all of the residents and the staff managed to escape without injury although all of their personal possessions were destroyed. What a shame.

Well done to the fire brigade for their fire fighting skills and to the local residents and the Red Cross who helped take old folk to shelter in a nearby primary school.

The fence line along the side of Ord Hill continues into the shallows of Munlochy Bay. Across the bay is Drumderfit Hill with its Dun currently standing clear in an area of felled woodland.

Friar's Bridge

Friars Bridge was opened in 1987, and carries two lanes of traffic in both directions. Its name reflects the fact that there used to be a Dominican friary on the east bank of the River Ness, near where the bridge runs. The bridge carries the A82 road across the river. Although it is difficult to spot, unless you are directly underneath, the bridge is actually two identical bridges, side by side, with a very narrow gap between them.

Thistle Inn on Celt Street

This independently owned pub has an interesting history. The original building dated from between 1690 and 1710, and was a coaching inn on the main road north to Beauly. In the 1860s permission was required for public houses to sell alcohol. The Thistle Inn was at first refused but apparently carried on trading, but re-applied a few years later, and was successful.

The building looks old but in fact it is a replica. The original had become unstable, and was demolished and replaced by the present building in 2003. The Mayflower lounge bar & function room was demolished in 2006, but the antique wood panels were preserved, and this part of the inn was replaced in 2008. This reconstruction must be a fairly unique event these days, when most pubs which were no longer in a fit state, would be demolished and the land used for other purposes.

158731 + 158727 pass the platforms of the former Culloden Moor station and head towards Culloden viaduct with the 16.30 Inverness - Edinburgh train.

Culloden Moor is 6 3/4 miles from Inverness on the Highland main line to Perth, the double track changes to single here. The station was closed under the Beeching Report in May 1965.

George V Post Box

This old postbox, which dates from somewhere between 1910 and 1936, is on the corner of Perceval Road and Kenneth Street. The street which can be seen in the background leading off Kenneth Street, is Celt Street.

New postboxes in Scotland have not displayed a royal cipher for several decades. This is because of controversy over the present sovereign's EIIR cipher. Although the Queen is Elizabeth II in England and Wales, she is, strictly speaking, Elizabeth I in Scotland. Queen Elizabeth the First (of England and Wales) was never Queen of Scotland. To satisfy these objections, when new postboxes were installed they showed a crown, but no royal cipher.

This postbox is number IV3 34. Last collection is 5.45 pm Monday to Friday, and 11 am on Saturday.

The sunken gardens.

Forres in Morayshire is one of Scotland's oldest small towns, and also one of its most attractive.

Forres is situated just off the A96 Inverness/Aberdeen trunk road, about 27 miles east of the Highland capital of Inverness.

The town's impressive parks and gardens with outstanding floral sculptures have led to many awards from the prestigious Britain and Scotland in Bloom competitions. See Forresweb.

The jewel in the crown of Forres is Grant Park, close to the centre of the town and at the foot of the wooded Cluny Hill, on top of which is sited a tower commemorating Nelson's victory at Trafalgar.

As well as providing lots of green recreational space for the locals, Grant Park (donated to the town in 1924 by Sir Alexander Grant Bt) also hosts the Annual Highland Games, and has two superb horticultural display areas, one a series of themed displays within a meadow and the other the sunken garden. The old estate road passes through the park, lined with ancient conifers.

Although the cold winds of winter have sent their first notice, and the displays are past their best, they are still simply breathtaking.

This sandstone pillar which has had recent repair work to keep it standing is one of only two remnants of the Blackfriars Abbey.

The 1935 portion of the Telephone Exchange can be seen directly behind, with the newer building and the connecting "bridge" reflected in the windows!

In 1233 AD a Dominican Friary was constructed in Inverness. It was located on the edge of the Town Centre, directly opposite St Michael’s Mound, where St Columba of Iona is said to have preached in 565 AD. There has been a church on that site since Celtic times, where the Old High Church currently stands.

The Friary or Abbey (Blackfriars) was disbanded in 1556 at the time of the Reformation, and the building soon fell into disrepair. In 1567 Queen Mary (Mary Queen of Scots, mother of King James VI and I) awarded the lands and church buildings of the Dominicans to the Council and Community of Inverness. In 1653 the Town of Inverness sold the ruinous buildings to Oliver Cromwell's local representative for use in construction of the Citadel at Inverness Harbour (several other large disused church buildings in the area also suffered a similar fate, and what stone remained was later used in the construction of the Castle.

In 1935 a smart new Telephone Exchange was constructed in Friars Lane, on the west extremity of the Town Centre proper. It was built of sandstone, and despite its modern look ,the colour of the stone makes it blend in. The land on which it is located was where the Abbey's School had stood and the Exchange backed on to the Blackfriars graveyard - now confusingly called Greyfriars! This graveyard would have been within the actual abbey building, and nowadays only a sandstone pillar and an effigy of a knight (now mounted on a wall) remain of the actual building. The gravestones still legible all appear to be more recent, mainly 18th century.

In the 1970s, as telecommunications became more prolific (but before miniaturisation took full hold) there was a need to extend the Telephone Exchange, but it was not possible due to the ancient graveyard, although other land further down Friars Street was available. A novel solution was adopted, with a "bridge" (an enclosed corridor) at first floor level being used to provide access between the two buildings without disturbing those resting beneath.

Strathnairn Farmers Association Agricultural Working Vintage Rally & Display Day (its full title!) is an annual one day event held in September. It all happens in a field at Daviot Farm, about 6 miles south of Inverness.

Keith Town Station

This is the Keith end of the preserved railway to Dufftown. The station building was brought from Kennethmont to replace the vanished original building. The tower of St Rufus, the parish kirk of Keith, rises above the station. Unfortunately the view is spoiled by the rubbish-strewn foreground.

Seaforth House, Maryburgh

Seaforth House overlooks the village of Maryburgh near Dingwall. It was built in 1907 by the Earl of Cromarty. It has been a sanatorium, an auxiliary hospital, a children's home and a training centre. It is now a charitable non-profit making nursing and respite care home.
